The Daily Bruin joined 39 college newspapers on an amicus brief filed Wednesday calling on an appeals court to defend student press freedom. 
The brief – filed by the Student Press Law Center, a legal advocacy nonprofit – urges the United States 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse a district court’s ruling that argues a university’s decision to operate student publications is government speech and therefore not subject to the First Amendment.

The California State Assembly passed a UC-backed multibillion-dollar bond measure Monday that, if approved by voters, would fund scientific research throughout the state. 
Senate Bill 895 – or the California Science and Health Research Bond Act – would create the California Foundation for Science and Health Research, which would award $7.5 billion in grants and loans to private and public research institutions, including the UC.

A California news outlet filed a lawsuit against the UC Board of Regents on Monday after UCLA failed to fulfill public records requests for nearly one year. 
CalMatters, a nonprofit news organization covering issues across California, filed a lawsuit to obtain records about how UCLA pays its student-athletes, the outlet reported Monday.

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to hear an appeal to a ruling in favor of UC researchers who argued that it was illegal to terminate research grants based on diversity-related language.

UCPD is investigating an alleged drug-facilitated aggravated assault that occurred on Gayley Avenue on Wednesday. 
A UCLA student attended a party on the 600 block of Gayley Avenue – where UCLA’s fraternities are located – and saw someone add an unidentified powder to his drink before he was pressured to drink it, according to a Thursday UCPD Clery Timely Warning alert. 
UCPD does not know the identity of the perpetrator and if they are affiliated with UCLA, said Richard Mejia, the director of emergency communications and information, in an email statement. 
People with information related to the incident should contact UCPD, the alert stated.

UC President James Milliken urged Congress to address federal research grant disbursement delays in a July 29 letter.

A union representing more than 6,400 UC resident physicians and fellows reached a tentative agreement with the University on Wednesday.
The Committee of Interns and Residents, a local affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, began contract negotiations with the University in August, according to a Thursday UC Office of the President press release.

The UC Academic Senate will decide whether or not to recommend reinstating standardized testing requirements for undergraduate admissions by June 2027, the UC Board of Regents announced Tuesday. 
UC Regents Chair Maria Anguiano announced the decision during its July meeting at UC San Francisco.

The UC Board of Regents appointed Jordan Roiland to be the 2027-28 student regent Tuesday. 
Roiland, who is the first medical student to serve in the role, earned a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics & statistics and biochemistry from Stony Brook University and earned a Master of Science in Health and Medical Sciences from UC Berkeley in 2025.

A union representing administrative professionals and clerical workers across the UC voted to approve a new contract with the University July 2. 
Teamsters Local 2010’s Clerical & Allied Services CX unit – which represents 22,000 UC workers – reached the five-year agreement after 10 months of bargaining and with 99% of voting members in favor, according to a July 2 press release from the union.
