Graduating Bruins will hear from UCLA alumnus and famous actor and director Randall Park at the UCLA College commencement on June 16, UCLA announced Wednesday.

Park will deliver a keynote address at all three commencement ceremonies for the college, scheduled for 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. The former Bruin grew up in Los Angeles and earned his bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Asian American studies in 1997, and concluded his studies at the university with a master’s degree in Asian American studies in 1999.

He has also starred in a variety of television series and films, such as “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” the “Aquaman” franchises, “Fresh off the Boat,” “Blockbuster,” “Veep,” and “The Mindy Project.”

At UCLA in 1995, Park founded Lapu, the Coyote that Cares Theatre Company, an Asian American student theater company, alongside two other Bruins. The company aims to provide an Asian American voice in an industry in which they remain underrepresented and still remains active on campus today.

Park also worked with his fellow former Bruins in 2019 to launch Imminent Collision, a company inspired by a play produced by LCC. LCC boasts other alumni alongside Park, including his “Always Be My Maybe” film co-star Ali Wong, who graduated from UCLA in 2005.

“Through his artistry and activism, Randall Park has opened countless doors for others and advocated for a more just and equal world,” Miguel García-Garibay, senior dean of the UCLA College and dean of physical sciences, told UCLA Newsroom. “He is a true Bruin in every sense, and we know his wit and wisdom will inspire our graduating seniors to blaze their own trails and create a better future.”

He has contributed to other UCLA projects as well, serving as an alumni volunteer at UCLA UniCamp, a program where student volunteers host hundreds of LA youth for a residential outdoor summer camp. The English department also hosted Park as a keynote speaker to department graduates in 2017, and Park received the 2016 Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year award, which honors outstanding alumni for their personal achievements and contributions to the university.

“As a proud Bruin, I am deeply honored to be delivering the keynote address for the class of 2023,” Park told UCLA Newsroom. “College graduation is the most pivotal day of any person’s life – more significant than marriage, more special than the birth of a child, more monumental than the signing of the Declaration of Independence – so I do not take this responsibility lightly.”
