Former President Donald Trump will retake the Oval Office, according to the Associated Press.

Trump’s victory over Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris comes after a tumultuous election cycle, including a Manhattan, New York, jury convicting Trump on 34 felony counts of fraud in May and President Joe Biden exiting the race in July. Polls before the election indicated that the election would be among the closest in American history, with nearly deadlocked races in key battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.

However, Election Day results favored Trump, who is projected to win four out of seven swing states – while the other three remain undecided – and the popular vote.

“This was the greatest political movement of all time – there’s never been anything like this in this country,” Trump said in a speech to his supporters Tuesday night. “We’re going to fix our borders, we’re going to fix everything in our country.”

Nathan Hochman is set to win the race for Los Angeles District Attorney, unseating incumbent George Gascón.

Hochman, a former federal prosecutor and United States Assistant Attorney General, was leading the race by over 400,000 votes as of early Wednesday morning. The result reflects polling from the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies and the LA Times throughout the campaign, which put Hochman ahead of Gascón by around 30 percentage points.

For the first time since 2021, Republicans will control the United States Senate.

At 9:06 p.m., the Associated Press projected Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., would win reelection – giving the Republican party 51 seats. The result comes even though Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, won his bid for election.

While Trump – who is three electoral votes away from claiming the presidency, according to AP projections – has not been consistent on his stance on abortion, several state-level Constitutional changes were on the ballot this year, said Cathren Cohen, a staff attorney at the Center on Reproductive Health, Law and Policy at UCLA Law. Measures in states such as Colorado and New York have passed, though measures in Florida, Nebraska and South Dakota have failed, according to The Guardian.

“They (the votes) do send a strong message,” she said. “Even in states where they’ve elected Republicans, there’s this very clear signal from the voting population that they don’t want abortion to be further restricted.”

Cohen added that she believes Florida’s vote, in particular, is the result of interference by figures such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

With the potential of a second Trump presidency, Cohen said she is worried about potential presidential restrictions on reproductive health care without legislative oversight, such as through criminalizing the mailing of abortion pills. She added that while a potential combination of a Republican Congress and president could lead to a total abortion ban, it’s not clear if they would be willing to go against popular support for abortion.

THE HILL – Peter Dachtler, first-year economics and environmental studies student, said he felt the levels of disagreement between Democratics and Republicans have been historic, focusing more on rights issues than traditional economic disagreements. He added that he plans to stay up until Alaska is called.

“It’s incredibly disheartening to see that Donald Trump is likely going to win, and I fear what he will do in the next four years, deeply,” Dachtler said.

THE HILL – Next to a food truck outside Rieber Terrace, Liam Findley, a first-year global studies student, said he felt people are dejected as the crowd murmurs about Trump’s projected win.

“I think a lot of people are sort of dejected, or apathetic,” he said. “I think obviously a lot of people here voted and did what they could, but California is going blue either way.”

Watching the races for the Senate and the House, Findley only hopes there will be some “sort of check” to a Trump presidency, adding that he is worried the Trump administration will be radical.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES – As Trump’s speech ends, the Continental Club watch party is clearing out, with only a few committed partygoers still watching CNN’s analysis. Erik Juharyan, who claimed a seat as soon as the doors opened at 5 p.m., is among those heading for the door. He said the result feels conclusive, so there was no point in staying longer.

“Based on the numbers purely, I think, yeah, it does feel pretty over,” Juharyan said. “No matter who wins, I hope the American people can win for the next four years.”

SANTA MONICA – Jon Katz, president of the Santa Monica Democratic Club, spoke about his own community when asked about how to keep energy levels towards voting high.

“The same night that Trump was winning, our city council race was a success for Democrats,” he said. That shows that there can be different types of successes and failures at different levels, and we need to build the party back up from the ground.”
