Rick Chavez Zbur was reelected to the California State Assembly District 51 seat Tuesday.
The incumbent Democrat defeated Republican Stephan Hohil by a landslide in California State Assembly District 51, according to the Los Angeles Times. District 51 encompasses parts of Westwood, Santa Monica, Franklin and Beachwood canyons, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills.
The LA Times called the race with about 58% of total votes tabulated around 1:14 a.m. Zbur’s victory was secured with just above 74% of the vote, with Hohil only receiving about 26% of the vote.
Zbur is the former executive director of LGBTQ+ civil rights organization Equality California and former president of the California Environmental Voters. He is the author of The Safe and Supportive Schools Act, which provides LGBTQ+ competency training for public school teachers.
In July 2023, Zbur was appointed Democratic Caucus Chair of the California Assembly.
Zbur’s priorities for California include affordable housing, public safety, civil rights and environmental justice. In his campaign, Zbur emphasized his commitment to supporting immigrant families and the LGBTQ+ community, as well as his dedication to criminal justice and health care support.
Zbur spoke at an April 28 counter-protest at UCLA criticizing the Palestine solidarity encampment and condemning pro-Palestine protesters. He also spoke at a Nov. 7, 2023, Bruins for Israel rally held at UCLA that called for the release of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas, saying that he attended the rally in support of his Jewish constituents.
Hohil, a former entrepreneur and County Central Committee member, ran on a platform of combatting homelessness and rising crime in LA. The New Jersey local, who moved to the district in 2021, said he wanted to combat policies he felt were too liberal.
Zbur will be up for reelection again in 2026.
