The morning after pulling an all-nighter ““ when students
may find themselves nodding off in a lecture hall and consequently
becoming the involuntary subject of the professor’s lecture
on sleep deprivation ““ is perhaps the undergraduates’
unofficial welcome to college.
The water is touched twice in a students’ UCLA career
““ when they are first “Bruinized” into UCLA, and
when they graduate.
Otherwise, the Inverted Fountain in front of Franz Hall remains
largely ignored, with the exception of the occasional smirk from
students who overhear tour guides telling the tale of this
“toilet bowl” to prospective students.
Last year, the black daughter of a former colleague of Vu Tran,
director of UCLA undergraduate admissions, was faced with a
quandary.
She was accepted to UCLA, UC Berkeley and the University of
Southern California, which offered her a full tuition scholarship.

Almost two decades of advocacy have paid off for supporters of
the diversity requirement, which is currently undergoing a
year-long implementation process.
After announcing its commitment to approving the proposal at a
rally last Thursday, the executive board of the Academic Senate
expects the requirement to be implemented into the curriculum by
fall 2005.

As the circle of student supporters of the diversity requirement
deepened, so did the emotions Tuesday night at the inauguration of
tent city.
Amid tears, students from numerous minority campus organizations
joined Undergraduate Students Association Council members for the
beginning of a three-day campout in front of Schoenberg Hall to
demand that UCLA incorporate a diversity requirement into its
curriculum.
