CAMPBELL: People have enjoyed classical music for centuries. But, as with any art form, there’s always room for it to change, adapt and grow. Alternative classical music is a burgeoning genre that allows players to improvise notes and melodies within classical works.
Recent UCLA fine arts graduate students Nathan Ward and Sam Bivins adopted the characters “LAguylovesLA” and “DJ Just Press Play” respectively to form their ironically subversive, alternative band called “Iconic Splendor,” which was featured in the Hammer Museum’s annual Arts Party last night.
UCLA’s Program in Experimental Critical Theory (ECT) aims to expand discourse in theory beyond the boundaries of academia to wider publics through provocative public programs. This past weekend, director of ECT and UCLA Professor Kenneth Reinhard organized a series of free, public lectures with internationally recognized philosophers Slavoj Žižek, Mladen Dolar, and Alenka Zupančič.
