The elimination of wild-card entrant Jeff Morrison in Saturday’s
semifinal match against Nicolas Kiefer set the stage for an
all-German final. But Morrison, an American, put up a worthy fight
in three sets that kept the crowd guessing until the last
point.
It’s been said his career has come to a close. But Andre
Agassi put up a fight Friday night to convince any spectator
otherwise.
He still fell to Germany’s Tommy Haas ““ 7-6 (5), 6-7
(6), 6-3 ““ but was clearly the crowd’s favorite at the
quarterfinals of the Mercedes-Benz Cup, receiving multiple standing
ovations, including one as he departed the court after Haas
advanced to the semis.
Wednesday night found the Bryan brothers one step closer to
their goal of winning the Mercedes-Benz Cup.
The doubles team ““ of twins ““ defeated the team of
Alex Bogomolov-Taylor Dent, 6-2, 7-6 in a match that, despite a
small comeback from Bogomolov-Dent in the second set, went to the
Bryans easily.
Identical twins Bob and Mike Bryan have always been known
as a pair.
And for them, that’s just fine.
The duo, ranked No. 1 in the world in men’s doubles, enjoy
being known as “the Bryans.”
“It’s not frustrating; I’m so used to being a
twin,” Bob said.
In the eyes of the men’s golf team, this weekend’s
regional competition is the first step to the national
championship.
“All the other tournaments have just been getting us
prepared for this tournament,” junior John Poucher said.
