For most of the UCLA track and field team, this weekend will be the last of the 2017 season.
The Pac-12 championship is the last meet that the athletes have to get their times and scores into the top 48 of the Western Division and advance to the NCAA West Regional.
After the extensive indoor season, the Bruins will top it off at the long-anticipated NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Four of UCLA track and field’s top athletes – two jumpers and two throwers – will take part this weekend in College Station, Texas.
With the indoor invitationals behind them, the UCLA track and field team opened up its outdoor season this past weekend.
The Bruins, who according to director Mike Maynard are training through the early season meets in preparation for championship season later in the year, took first place in roughly half of the events that were offered in their dual meet against the Long Beach State 49ers on Saturday.
For many, the indoor track and field season will conclude this weekend. For others, they’ll be trying to make it last another two weeks.
UCLA track and field will travel to the University of Washington campus this weekend to compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships.
The UCLA men’s track and field team has only had one jumper compete at the NCAA outdoor championships since 2004.
The one? Senior long jumper Austin Hazel, who placed 21st last year.
