Television’s current stars took to the stage to give audiences a glimpse into this year’s cinematic hits.
From April 4-12, the Paley Center for Media’s annual PaleyFest LA brought the casts and creatives from eight of this year’s hit series to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. According to its website, the Paley Center for Media leads the conversation around the cultural impact of media, and curates the publicly accessible Paley Archive, both at the Paley Museum in New York and at the Beverly Hills Public Library. The Daily Bruin attended the festival’s closing weekend to highlight three popular shows: “Emily in Paris,” “Scrubs” and “Your Friends & Neighbors.” Throughout the weekend, each show screened an episode selected by the producers, then held a conversation with the brains behind these fan-favorite shows.
The first panel featured “Emily in Paris,” the hit Netflix series that follows a young woman whose marketing firm sends her to Paris to bring an American perspective to its Parisian office. In attendance was Darren Star (show creator, executive producer, writer), Andrew Fleming (executive producer, director), Lily Collins (“Emily Cooper,” producer), Ashley Park (“Mindy”), Lucas Bravo (“Gabriel”), Samuel Arnold (“Julien”), Bruno Gouery (“Luc”) and Lucien Laviscount (“Alfie”). Season five premiered on Netflix on Dec. 18 and sees Emily move to Rome to open and run a new office for Agence Grateau, providing a change of scenery from the show’s titular location. The show was nominated for two awards at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards and nine Primetime Emmy Awards to date. It stars actress Lily Collins, who started acting at the age of two and is the daughter of English musician Phil Collins.
“I’ve learned so much about myself through playing Emily. At the beginning of the show, she definitely felt like she had all the answers in a lot of ways. The more seasons that have gone on, there’s been an acceptance of vulnerability and asking for help,” Lily Collins said.

Actress Ashley Park said music has become an important part of her character, Mindy, as the seasons have progressed. Coming from a Broadway background in which she performed the same songs for eight shows per week, she knows how to make the variety of songs on the show her own, Park added. Director Fleming said for Park’s performance of “It’s Raining Men” by the Weather Girls at Paris Pride in the fifth season, the production dispersed flyers to attendees at an actual Paris Pride event to attend a taping of the performance, contributing to the show’s authenticity.
“(The performance) was filled with these amazing people that were just so dedicated and wanted to be there,” Collins said. “The energy was the most positive I’ve ever felt on set.”
PaleyFest member and attendee Beatriz Hermida said she enjoys supporting the arts and wanted to bring her daughter, Hailey Mills, to support as well. She added that the “Emily in Paris” conversation showed the actors’ authenticity and ability to bring people together through art. Mills said she appreciates the style captured in the show and seeing the filming locations, having traveled through Europe in the past.
During the panel, Fleming said the show’s class and style has evolved with Emily, mirroring her journey of becoming more sophisticated and French. This led to the show shifting locations – giving Emily the chance to explore other European cities. Without giving away any spoilers, Star said Emily will soon be heading to Mykonos and Monaco. Additionally, Fleming added that Emily will be “doubling down” on French locations outside of Paris. The show is expected to begin filming season six in May.

Next up was a conversation with the team of the “Scrubs” revival, which arrived on ABC after over a decade off the air. The popular show puts audiences in the middle of Sacred Heart hospital, exposing the relationships and comedic nature of the medical personnel working there. Executive producer Aseem Batra said the writing and production teams wanted to give long-time fans a sense of nostalgia from the original series, but felt they needed to give audiences a new element as well. This included a slow introduction of new interns and cast members, among them being Vanessa Bayer’s character, Batra said.
“When you experience nostalgia, you walk into that old candy store you remember as a kid and you’re so excited that you’re like ‘It’s a little dustier and smaller than I thought it was,’” Batra said. “You have to have something else there, so we didn’t try to shove any characters down your throats.”
Most notably of those present from the cast and creatives of “Scrubs” were Zach Braff (“John ‘J.D.’ Dorian,” executive producer), Donald Faison (“Christopher Turk,” executive producer), Sarah Chalke (“Elliot Reid,” executive producer), Bill Lawrence (executive producer) and Aseem Batra (executive producer). Moderating the panel was comedian and SNL-veteran Bayer, who guest stars on the reboot as “Sibby Wilson.”
Lawrence said the show is based on his college best friend, John Doris, who is now a cardiologist in Los Angeles. He said Doris always reminds him that those who choose to go into his field of work must be “doing so to be of service,” not for the money, and he added that they try to honor this mission in the show.
Attendees Marisa Marquez and Erykah Baker said they bonded over “Scrubs” in college and felt the cast’s genuine friendships with one another mirror the way they built their relationship. Marquez said she comes from a medical family and previously worked in a hospital, making her appreciate the light-hearted nature of the medical sitcom versus the dire circumstances typically portrayed in medical dramas. Braff emphasized this during the panel.
“We all really love each other and are close, and I think that this show shows that, but in the environment of truly trying to save lives,” Braff said. “That’s why people respond to it, and that’s why both Bill and now Aseem are able to write and interweave the comedy and the drama so well – because it’s real.”

Lastly, returning for its second season on Apple TV, “Your Friends & Neighbors” features a retired hedge fund manager burglarizing his wealthy neighbors to afford his lavish lifestyle, but soon realizes he’s taken it too far when he breaks into the wrong house. Joining Jessica Radloff – moderator and Senior West Coast Editor of Glamour – was Jon Hamm (“Andrew ‘Coop’ Cooper,” executive producer), Amanda Peet (“Mel Cooper”), Olivia Munn (“Samantha Levitt”) and Jonathan Tropper (creator, writer, director, executive producer).
The show’s most recent season deals with middle age and the effects of aging, Radloff said. Peet said she was surprised to hear the show would tackle the topic of menopause, specifically for her character, Mel. She added that filming scenes with her daughter on the show as she applies to college hit close to home as she was going through the same process with her daughter in real life. The show resonates with audiences due to its depiction of being in a relationship at a later stage in life, and reflects the variability that comes along with that, Hamm added.
“Running and chasing and shooting guns and things exploding is also fun, but when it’s just two people sitting on a stoop talking about things that really resonate, not only with the characters but with the audience, that is something really special,” Hamm said.
Tropper said he maintains a big-picture idea of the show’s story arc with a middle and an end, but the length of the middle portion could be extended or shortened, depending on the number of seasons they get. He said these ideas are fully flushed out in the writers room every time they find out they’ve been renewed for another season. The first three episodes of season two of “Your Friends & Neighbors” are now streaming with new episodes released every Friday.
