beaux

With a true love for music, beaux’s new chapter will “live here forever.”

London-born artist Beaux South released his debut album “I Thought We’d Live Here Forever” on June 3. Best known as beaux, the singer-songwriter’s new LP has been in the works for three years, while he was busy with other projects such as his breakthrough EP “how can i sleep? i’m wide awake.” Throughout his career, the artist has performed in music festivals such as Leeds in 2023 and as a supporting act for indie bands like Valley and Sunday (1994).

The recently released album features 11 tracks, including fan favorite “Cut My Hair,” which explores the singer’s uncertainty after being unexpectedly dropped by his label. On his TikTok account, beaux shared the LP was self-produced and recorded in the musician’s bedroom with the help of friends, explaining how his dedication to music motivated him to develop the album as an independent artist. This sentiment is reflected in the project’s promo, with the songwriter visiting listeners’ homes to perform free private shows, driven by the desire to share his music with those supporting his work.

Overcoming a setback, beaux is stronger than ever, showing how anything can serve as inspiration for art.

Black Country, New Road

Nothing screams summer quite like Black Country, New Road’s newest whimsical art-rock era.

Hailing from England, the critically acclaimed band Black Country, New Road is continuing to build its legacy with their fourth project, “Forever Howlong.” Released in April, “Forever Howlong” is the band’s first studio album since the departure of lead singer Isaac Wood three years ago. Wood’s departure left the band tasked with restructuring its songwriting and singing roles, but it wasted no time in doing so. The six remaining band members toured and released a live album in 2023, reinforcing the band’s cohesion and direction.

With some of the characteristic six-minutes-per-song style of the band’s earlier work, “Forever Howlong” recontextualizes their signature art-rock stylings into brighter moods. What were once dissonant electric guitar themes are now more playful textures, making use of different instruments like mandolin and harpsichord. Previous narratives of heartbreak and angst are replaced by lyrics on the joys of female friendship and only a little angst.

With the album out forever, one can only wonder how long until the world falls head over heels for Black Country, New Road.

Blondshell

Blondshell strikes a chord with listeners in her newest album, “If You Asked For A Picture.”

Sabrina Teitelbaum, better known as Blondshell, has been combining moody guitar riffs with thoughtful lyrics since her debut in 2022, though her music career began years before under the name BAUM. The 28-year-old New York native has performed as the opening act for popular artists such as Suki Waterhouse, Liz Phair and Glass Animals, before recently rising to fame herself. While Blondshell’s TikTok-viral cover of Addison Rae’s “Diet Pepsi” shed light on her vocal talent and rock flair, her original songs capture her knack for songwriting.

The artist released “If You Asked For A Picture” on May 2. Hidden behind the album’s edgy electric guitar and drums reminiscent of rock band Hole, Blondshell’s new project reflects on past relationships, body image and discovering her identity. The singer began her tour in May and will be making stops across the United States and Europe through November.

If they have not already, music lovers will certainly be asking Blondshell for a picture soon.

Mamalarky

With almost a decade of musical experience, Mamalarky “Won’t Give Up” in the pursuit of releasing quality indie rock music.

The four-member group – formed in Austin, Texas, in 2016 – consists of guitarist and vocalist Livvy Bennett, keyboardist Michael Hunter, bassist Noor Khan and drummer Dylan Hill. Although the group relocated to Los Angeles in 2018, the quartet’s 2022 sophomore record “Pocket Fantasy” was largely recorded while Bennett, Hunter and Khan lived together in Atlanta during the COVID-19 pandemic. The band has since released its third album – the 13-track LP “Hex Key” – in April, and will perform at LA’s Permanent Records Roadhouse on Aug. 22.

“Hex Key” takes Mamalarky’s artistry forward by ensuring the band’s signature variation between tracks remains, rather than creating a monotonous sonic soup. Sprinkled across the synth-driven LP are hints of funky R&B, jazz and dream pop. The album was recorded in the band’s LA living room-turned-home studio in the time between hikes taken in the surrounding hills. Publications such as Pitchfork have praised the project and Mamalarky’s musicianship as “defying expectations just by giving in to their own odd impulses.”

With future releases and continued layered song craft, Mamalarky might live up to their song “#1 Best of All Time.”

Mitch Rowland

Mitch Rowland is cooking up a way to hold on to elusive time with his sophomore album “Whistling Pie.”

The 37-year-old LA- and England-based artist is set to release his second album, “Whistling Pie,” on Sept. 12 – nearly two years after the release of his debut album “Come June.” The self-taught drummer and guitarist has been immersed in music since childhood, but broke through in the music industry after years of collaboration with pop prince Harry Styles, followed by a tour of Rowland’s own in 2024. The singer’s recent single, “Really Ready,” explores the feeling of jumping into the unknown for love.

While the second album furthers Rowland’s intimate folk sound, “Whistling Pie” came to fruition in the English countryside, where the artist said watching his children grow up made the album’s creative process a more urgent attempt to capture precious moments as they come. “Really Ready” evokes a perfect summery bittersweet mix of deep lyrics, uplifting instrumentation and vivid imagery. Rowland’s artfully tender vocals and folk-based banjo-guitar synthesis sculpts the single’s gentle nature. Featuring producer Rob Schnapf of Elliot Smith and Kurt Vile fame, the musician’s work has a welcome and familiar influence that tastefully highlights Rowland’s acoustic essence.

Rowland’s expanding sonic gallery will have listeners whistling his magnetic tunes in no time.
