Barney’s Beanery is more than deserving of its title as a Westwood staple.

With six locations scattered around Los Angeles, the beloved sports bar and grill has become a household name among UCLA students and Angelenos alike. Finding its home in Broxton Plaza over 15 years ago, the Westwood location has cemented itself as a fixture of campus life, offering a casual gathering spot for its largely collegiate audience. Its signature lineup of weekly events, from trivia and karaoke to themed watch parties, continues to draw in crowds on a regular basis, catering directly to its student-based clientele.

Leaning into its historical roots, the restaurant’s everyday menu is formatted into a newspaper, detailing its smorgasbord of all-day breakfast favorites and shareable appetizers. From its appetizer menu, the hot wings, available in five different flavor options, pack just the right punch of heat and spice. In addition, the mozzarella sticks, a late-night favorite, deliver on their light and airy flavor. While its food hits the mark for dive bar cuisine, the real showstoppers of the Westwood eatery are its tangible atmosphere and energy.

With an eclectic collection of license plates, vinyl records and UCLA memorabilia dotting every wall and ceiling, Barney’s leans into its signature lived-in charm. The curated chaos of the decor is not limited to the walls, as each table is coated in laminated newspaper clippings and vintage photos of celebrities and public figures. Keeping on theme with its casual ambience, the bar features an assortment of motorcycles on display, supplemented by the array of hubcaps scattered throughout the interior.

Boasting a plethora of TVs visible from almost every angle, the restaurant ensures all guests are catered for, playing programs from the MLB and NHL to “American Idol.” Its social environment keeps dedicated regulars coming back, offering a spattering of arcade games, foosball and a shuffleboard table tucked into its upstairs corner. While opportunities for entertainment at Barney’s are abundant, its events are what reliably draw in their crowd week after week.

Appealing to its student-based audience, Barney’s presents a variety of weekly events, many of which have now become Westwood traditions. Tuesday’s general knowledge trivia night and Wednesday’s themed trivia, both moderated by beloved host Dan Ostrander, remain two of the restaurant’s most popular events for students and locals. Thursday evenings become host to an open karaoke night, inviting the Westwood community to belt their favorites for a packed crowd.

Open 365 days a year, Barney’s dedicates itself to representing the Westwood community, hosting a variety of sports watch parties, including for UCLA football games and the Super Bowl. With stadium-style tiered seating upstairs, in addition to bar- and booth-style seats, the restaurant offers an optimized viewing experience for groups, reinforcing its social atmosphere.

Spanning two floors with bars on each level and a shaded outdoor patio, Barney’s has become a go-to gathering place for UCLA students. Although the prices can be steep for a college crowd, with mozzarella sticks priced at $13.50, the bar does offer reduced prices on appetizers during weekday happy hours and special drink discounts each day. Featuring $3 mimosas and $5 Bloody Marys, its weekend brunch menu also attracts a steady crowd on slower days.

Regularly introducing new drinks and dishes to its menu, the eatery keeps the experience fresh for its Westwood audience. With trivia-specific menu items and Westwood-exclusive bites like the Bruin Bowl, the Broxton Avenue location sets itself apart from its chain locations, defining its identity through connection to the UCLA community. While the restaurant draws in a plethora of locals from the Westwood vicinity, the student patrons most aptly reflect its true personality.

Staying true to its student-centered roots, Barney’s Beanery is sure to hold onto its Broxton Plaza home for many years to come.
