Film preview: Superhero sequels, horror films spring forward on the silver screen

(By Joanne Lee / Daily Bruin)
This spring, as flowers bloom, so will the silver screen – with fresh films ready to pop.
As the days warm and air turns crisp, there’s no better time to dive into new cinema. From long-awaited sequels to eerie thrillers and visionary directors, this season promises something for every moviegoer.
Read on for the Daily Bruin’s tailored picks for this budding season.

Final Destination: Bloodlines (Warner Bros. Picture)
This long-running series may be moviegoers’ next destination this spring.
Over a decade after its previous entry in 2011, “Final Destination: Bloodlines” resurrects the “Final Destination” franchise May 16. The film follows college student Stefani Lewis (Kaitlyn Santa Juana) as she unwinds premonitions of her family members’ deaths, seeking a way to prevent Death from claiming her bloodline. The film promises the same grisly accidents as its predecessors while reimagining the series as a family-centered tragedy, finally entering theaters after a six-year development timeline interrupted by strikes and a pandemic.
While this sixth film represents a fresh beginning for the dormant franchise, it also represents the final screen appearance of Tony Todd, who played series mainstay William Bludworth and died in 2024. The film’s marketing has hinted at other connections to prior films, from the trailer’s homage to the infamous logging truck accident from “Final Destination 2” and possible connections to the original film’s plane crash. With fresh scares and new vicious moments, this film can hopefully capture the gruesome horror of the series for fresh audiences.
With any luck, this will not be the series’s final destination.

Thunderbolts* (Marvel Studios)
Marvel is set to make its big return to superhero team films this spring with “Thunderbolts*.”
The newest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe premieres May 2, and follows an eclectic mix of fan favorite characters as they work together to face a threat bigger than any of them can handle alone. Sebastian Stan makes his return to the beloved role of Bucky Barnes, and he assembles a ragtag team consisting of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour), Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen), Antonia Dreykov (Olga Kurylenko) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). Each of these characters have unfinished storylines in past MCU movies and will be brought back together to help protect humanity, now that the Avengers have disbanded.
Although some fans have expressed discontent with the number of Marvel projects coming out in recent years, “Thunderbolts*” has received fairly positive feedback online, as fans are excited to learn more about what all these mysterious characters have been up to since their last appearances in MCU projects. Ghost, for example, was last seen in “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” where her invisibility powers were temporarily healed, and she stopped experiencing debilitating pain. In the same vein, “Thunderbolts*” brings together a myriad of old characters and offers answers to their past in an action-packed, chaotic blockbuster that is sure to leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
With such a unique set of characters coming together, fans are sure to be in a thunderous roar as they watch the Thunderbolts take on an otherworldly threat.

The Shrouds (SBS Productions)
Grief meets grotesque innovation in David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds.”
The body-horror auteur returns with a chilling new feature, premiering in select theaters April 18 before its nationwide release April 25. Written and directed by Cronenberg, the film burrows into the psyche of a widower who invents GraveTech – a burial shroud equipped with cameras – to witness his wife’s body decompose in real time. Starring Vincent Cassel as the haunted inventor Karsh and Diane Kruger as the wife he can’t let go, “The Shrouds” melds emotional devastation with unsettling futurism.
A string of grave desecrations, including his wife’s, spirals Karsh into paranoia and conspiracy, pulling in Guy Pearce as his suspicious brother-in-law and Sandrine Holt as a new, complicated flame. The film lingers on decaying bodies and flickering screens, forcing audiences to confront mortality, obsession and the digital afterlife.
With Cronenberg’s signature blend of cerebral horror and bodily unease, “The Shrouds” blurs the line between mourning and madness.
In a world where the dead are always watching – closure may be the final illusion.

Bring Her Back (A24)
How far would you go to bring back the one you love the most?
A24’s latest horror film, “Bring Her Back,” is slated for release May 30, with twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou as co-directors. The brothers made their directorial splash in 2022 with their critically acclaimed thriller “Talk to Me,” which portrayed a group of teenagers who use an embalmed hand to summon malevolent spirits, while also touching on themes of loss and grief. “Talk to Me” was a breakout hit, overtaking “Hereditary” as A24’s top-grossing horror film.
“Bring Her Back” delves into dark family secrets and the occult, following two siblings who uncover a horrifying ritual in their foster mother’s home. The haunting trailer portrays an unsettling, eerie atmosphere, without giving much of the plot away. It is suggested that the foster mother, played by Golden Globe winner Sally Hawkins, is trying to resurrect her daughter through the bodies of the children in her care, presenting a chilling exploration of how far grief can push a person. The visuals and tone showcased in the trailer promise a masterful blend of psychological and supernatural horror.
With this film, the Philippou brothers are poised to further solidify their status as the reigning champions of A24 horror.
