When he is on stage, FINNEAS takes the audience through a roller coaster of emotions.
As part of his ongoing concert series “For Cryin’ Out Loud! : The Tour,” FINNEAS headlined the Hollywood Palladium on Wednesday for the last show of its North American leg. After the release of his latest album of the same name in October, the musician is touring as a solo artist for the first time in four years. Playing songs from his early days to his latest album, the Los Angeles-born singer created an ecstatic experience through his exceptional lyricism, performance skills and attention to detail.

The show opened with an almost 40-minute-long set from supporting band Bad Suns, which set up an energetic atmosphere with songs such as “Cardiac Arrest” and “Communicating.” At 9:16 p.m., the venue went dark except for two spotlights pointing toward a keyboard. Simultaneously, suspenseful background music started playing as a figure emerged from the right corner of the stage, waved at the crowd and sat down at the keyboard. Fans erupted into screams as the background music faded and revealed the first song, “Starfucker.” Although a slow-tempo, piano-driven piece, the song provoked excitement from the crowd, which sang along with FINNEAS’ vocals from beginning to end.
Continuing with “Lotus Eater,” the third single off the singer’s latest album, the show switched to a brighter tone with the song’s upbeat tempo – two elements reflected in the rest of the set. During this song, FINNEAS seemed to be relaxed on stage, moving around the space while interacting with both his band and the crowd, encouraging fans to clap to the rhythm of the music while he played the electric guitar. Next, “Cleats” achieved a party-like atmosphere, with those on stage and in the crowd singing and dancing in unison.

After the set, FINNEAS spoke to the crowd for the first time. In a brief welcoming speech, the singer jokingly thanked the audience for braving the light rain and coming to the show, quickly introducing the next song, “Sweet Cherries.” The lights, flashing to the beat of the music, turned from blue to a shade of red, inspired by the song title. The musician, once again showcasing his ease on stage, danced to the song, even taking the microphone off its stand as a way to do so more freely. Keeping up the energy, “What’s It Gonna Take To Break Your Heart?” showcased incredible drum work by band member and Bad Suns drummer Miles Morris.
After exclusively playing new work, the show transitioned to older music with longtime fan favorite “Angel.” Back at the piano, the musician dedicated the song to his partner of more than six years, Claudia Sulewski, whom he has said is the inspiration for the piece. As the second slow-tempo song of the night, the piece showcased FINNEAS’ powerful vocals. As the song progressed, white gleams of light moved around the venue, and there was a white projection pattern on the stage’s background with a visual texture similar to that of clouds or feathers. These elements created an angelic atmosphere, coinciding with the song’s sentimental lyrics.

Lighting continued to be an important part of the show’s theatrics, especially with “The Kids Are All Dying,” during which red and green lights were used to represent various themes in the lyrics. Continuing with older work, FINNEAS proceeded to play “Partners in Crime” from his first EP, “Blood Harmony.” With orange lights creating a sunset effect, as depicted on the EP’s cover, the atmosphere became softer in the venue. Performing what can only be described as both a love song and a heartbreak song, FINNEAS played the acoustic guitar, provoking a nostalgic feeling that related to both the song’s lyrics and the connection to those following the singer’s career since 2019.
Later, FINNEAS took another speaking break to present one of the surprise guests of the night, Colin Blunstone, who is a vocalist from British rock band The Zombies. Together, Blunstone and FINNEAS performed The Zombies’ “Time Of The Season.” The crowd seemed to enjoy the performance, dancing and cheering for the singers. This upbeat ambiance continued into the next song, “2001,” during which FINNEAS took a few fans’ phones and filmed himself while singing and dancing.

After this, “Little Window” slightly lowered the euphoria of the crowd with its slower tempo. Showcasing his range as a performer, the piece was an entrancing moment of the show. Red lighting around the edges of the stage’s backdrop created a theater curtain effect, which played into the song’s subject of skewed perceptions and the isolation caused by social media. The clarity of each instrument and FINNEAS’ vocals made the performance of this song hypnotizing.
A few songs later, the show reached its peak with “Till Forever Falls Apart,” when singer-songwriter Ashe appeared as the second surprise guest. In a way that seemed impossible, Ashe’s performance surpassed the already high levels of excitement experienced in the show. Aside from the duo’s 2021 collaboration, fans at the show got the opportunity to be the first to hear the singers’ new project together, after a month of teasing fans through a cryptic Instagram account, @weshouldmakeaband.

During one of his final speeches, FINNEAS reminisced on the beginning of his career, touring with his sister and working with his dad, before dedicating “Family Feud” to his sister, Billie Eilish. After this, the mysterious music from the beginning of the show came back, building up to the last four songs. FINNEAS transitioned into the song “I Lost a Friend” before playing “Break My Heart Again” and his breakthrough song “Let’s Fall in Love for the Night.” Following this, the singer went full circle to close the show, performing the title track of his new album, “For Cryin’ Out Loud!” Fans continued chanting the song until its last few notes, never letting the vibrancy of the concert die down.
Just in time for the conclusion of the North American leg of his tour, FINNEAS’ incredibly well-planned show demonstrated his magnetic talent as an artist.
