A fire that started 1.8 miles away from the UCLA campus on Wednesday evening has been 60% contained.

The Sepulveda fire started around 11 p.m. Wednesday near the Getty Center, prompting evacuation warnings bordering the campus. The Los Angeles Fire Department had stopped the 45-acre fire’s forward progress as of 1:55 a.m. Thursday, and evacuation warnings were lifted, according to a statement from department spokesperson Margaret Stewart.

The fire was 60% contained as of 9:51 a.m. Thursday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, website. It is the first fire east of the Interstate 405 freeway near campus since the onset of the January 2025 fires across LA County.

Despite the Sepulveda fire starting 1.8 miles from the UCLA campus, students received no communication overnight from the UCLA administration. A Thursday morning post on the Bruins Safe Online website said campus remains open with in-person instruction, though campus leadership were monitoring the fires.

“UCLA is not under an evacuation warning at this time, and it has never been throughout the course of the wildfires this month,” a UCLA spokesperson said in the post.

A 12:59 a.m. status report on the Cal Fire website appeared to indicate UCLA had been placed under evacuation warning. However, UCPD spokesperson James Echols said at 1:28 a.m. that there were no evacuation warnings or orders covering campus.

UCLA had previously received an erroneous evacuation warning Jan. 9, after a fire in the Pacific Palisades began two days earlier. The Palisades fire spread 23,448 acres, is 72% contained and is one of four currently active in LA county, according to the Cal Fire website.

Critical fire conditions remain in place Thursday, with new fires likely to spread rapidly, according to a 8:23 a.m. post on social media platform X from the LA bureau of the National Weather Service.

“Winds will continue to increase and expand this morning,” the NWS said in the post. “Humidity is already extremely dry.”

Rain is forecasted from Saturday until Monday, according to a 5:39 p.m. Wednesday post from the NWS.

The cause of the Sepulveda fire is under investigation, according to the Cal Fire website. Stewart said in a 12:51 a.m. statement that around 250 firefighters attempted to fight the fire and aerial resources were used.

“There are no structures damaged and no injuries reported,” Stewart said in her 1:55 a.m. statement. “Firefighters will remain on scene through the night conducting mop up operations to ensure no hot spots remain.”
