Westwood residents received an erroneous evacuation warning Thursday afternoon.
The notification was sent out around 4 p.m. and instructed people that they were under evacuation warning. However, a UCPD spokesperson confirmed to the Bruin that the notification was sent out in error.
Westwood and the UCLA campus are not currently under evacuation warning or order, according to the Cal Fire website. The Westwood Recreation Center remains open and accepting evacuees.
The warning had been intended to be sent out to West Hills, which is over 14 miles away from UCLA, according to a UCPD statement on the social media platform X.
Utsav Gupta, a first-year physics student, said he threw all of his clothes into a bag when he heard the notice but has since heard it was in error. Jade Farrise, a first-year cognitive science student, added that even though she heard the warning was sent in error, she is planning to leave anyway as she does not want to take any chances.
“I personally am feeling really worried and anxious, but I’m also trying to be very hopeful that things will be okay,” she said.

In a 12:48 p.m. post on X, UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk said campus leaders will be continuously monitoring ongoing situations in the local area. Frenk earlier canceled undergraduate instruction and moved graduate classes online Wednesday evening.
“Many in our community are facing unimaginable challenges right now,” he said in the statement. “Please follow public safety warnings in your area, stay safe and look out for those around you.”
