The Hammer Museum will reopen Saturday after evacuation warnings bordering the UCLA campus were lifted, according to a post on the museum Instagram.

UCLA students will return to in-person classes Tuesday, UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk said in a Thursday campuswide email.

As of 10:10 p.m., the Palisades fire – which is the fire closest to UCLA – is now 39% contained, according to Cal Fire. The second-largest fire, which began in Altadena/Pasadena, is now 65% contained, per Cal Fire. There are no evacuation warnings or orders in place covering the UCLA campus, and classes are expected to resume in-person Tuesday.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has appointed Steve Soboroff to superintend the city’s recovery from fires that have swept Los Angeles County, according to a press release from Unified L.A. Although fire conditions are expected to return next week, less hazardous weather is expected over the weekend.

“The National Weather Services reports calm weather is expected through the weekend for the City of Los Angeles,” Unified L.A. said in the press release. “Current forecasts predict Santa Ana winds and potentially dangerous fire conditions to return starting next week.”

Some areas that had been evacuated because of the Palisades fire, which has spread 23,713 acres since Jan. 7 and is 39% contained, are now being repopulated, according to the press release. There are no evacuation warnings or notice for the UCLA campus and classes are expected to resume in-person Tuesday.

As of 5:45 p.m., UCLA’s campus status has returned to “open,” according to the Bruins Safe Online website.

Katy Yaroslavsky, the District 5 Los Angeles City Council member, said in an email that all evacuation warnings in City Council District 5 have been lifted. However, she added that residents should remain cautious by inspecting structures that may have been weakened by winds, checking for gas leaks and taking safety precautions when cleaning ash and burned materials.

The evacuation warning adjacent to UCLA was lifted around 1:40 p.m. this afternoon. No Palisades fire evacuation warnings remain on the east side of the 405 Freeway where UCLA is located.

Over 800 households have used the Disaster Recovery Center at the UCLA Research Park since it opened on Tuesday, according to a press release from Mayor Karen Bass. UCLA donated space at the former Westside Pavilion to create the center.

UCPD arrested one person Thursday for adding leaves and brush to a fire on campus. 

Officers arrested the person at the Hilgard Bus Turnaround around 7 p.m. and discovered that they had an illegal knife. Police quickly extinguished the fire and no damage was done to the terminal, UCPD Acting Captain of the Administrative Bureau Jeffrey Chobanian said in an emailed statement.

As of 10:45 a.m. Friday, there are no evacuation warnings or orders in place covering the UCLA campus.
