Evacuation warnings for the Palisades fire moved closer to Westwood on Friday evening.

New evacuation warnings have been issued in parts of Los Angeles to the northeast and east of the Palisades fire, according to Cal Fire.  There are currently no evacuation warnings for Westwood and the UCLA Campus as of 5 p.m. Friday, according to the Cal Fire website.

The new warnings reach parts of Brentwood and move closer toward the 405 freeway and up into Kenter Canyon, according to an evacuation map on the Cal Fire website. The Daily Bruin estimates these warnings are approximately 1 mile from the westernmost point of UCLA’s campus.

Evacuations have been lifted in some areas, and ordered in others as the Los Angeles fires close out their fourth day, with new fires igniting daily – though many, such as the Sunset fire in the Hollywood Hills, have been quickly contained.

People across LA have also been receiving false evacuation orders. A false evacuation order was issued Thursday to all of LA County, including Westwood.

In an email to the Daily Bruin, a UCLA Office of Emergency Management spokesperson said that if an evacuation order is issued to Westwood, UCLA will work with the Unified Command and the City of Los Angeles Emergency Operations Center to ensure student safety and evacuate them off campus if necessary.

The OEM is working with campus entities to ensure a “coordinated and efficient evacuation if necessary,” with emergency announcements to be transmitted through BruinAlert, the spokesperson said.

The OEM said it would work with city and county agencies to determine if a full campus evacuation, partial campus evacuation or shelter in place order would be safer for campus residents.

If an evacuation order is issued, students – including those without personal vehicles – should follow posted instructions from BruinPost announcements, the BruinAlerts and residential life staff, the spokesperson said in the statement.

“Campus operations continue to be limited; undergraduate classes are currently canceled, and graduate courses have been moved to remote instruction,” the spokesperson said in the 4:55 p.m. statement. “There is no immediate fire danger to the campus, and no evacuation warning area near the campus.”

Chancellor Julio Frenk sent a campus-wide email announcing that campus operations would continue being curtailed, with remote classes continuing until Monday.

As of Friday evening, the fires in LA County have burned nearly 40,000 acres and destroyed over 12,300 structures, according to the Cal Fire website.
