Kevin McGowan, director of Office of Emergency Management for the County of Los Angeles, apologized for the erroneous evacuation warning that went out to Los Angeles county residents yesterday, adding that the alerts are not human-driven. However, residents should not disable the notifications on their phones, he said.

“I implore everyone to not disable the messages on your phone,” he said. “Not receiving an alert can be a consequence of life and death.”

Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath said the city would examine exactly “how and why” the error occurred.
