Pret’s grab-and-go style cafe will prompt many students to grab-and-stay.

Pret A Manger opened its doors in Westwood on May 11, marking the second location of the British chain on the West Coast. While the only other Pret in California is located in the Tom Bradley International Terminal of the Los Angeles International Airport, Pret’s convenient location on the corner of Westwood Boulevard and Le Conte Avenue makes the cafe an attractive study spot for students. With a grab-and-go food setup, vegan options and student-oriented ambiance, Pret promises to rise in the ranks of UCLA students’ favorite study spots.

Guests entering Pret are greeted first by the friendly nature of the cashiers and second by the colorful and energetic atmosphere inside the cafe. Large windows supply ample natural light that cascades onto the tables and brightens up the space many students use to study.

Pret A Manger, French for “ready to eat,” lives up to its name with a stocked food selection that appeals to a diversity of preferences. The fridges to the left of the register offer a variety of salads, bowls and sandwiches, while an adjacent case of warm items displays hot wraps and soups. Vegetarians and vegans can navigate through the food options with a breeze with the help of clearly marked labels, though gluten-free options are more difficult to locate.

The Chipotle Chicken Salad with Herb Yogurt Dressing – an alluring choice among Pret’s refrigerated items – has an impressive mix of flavor for a premade salad. A creamy, tzatziki-like dressing balances out the tangy chicken while adding dimension to the bowl’s lettuce, avocado, corn and pickled red onions. Pret’s Famous Ham & Cheese Baguette is an easy handheld choice, but its mediocre taste and small size do not justify its price tag of $6.45.

Another fridge holding mini cheesecakes, pressed juices and fruit cups includes healthier choices but will disappoint patrons searching for inexpensive items. Similarly, Pret’s Blueberry & Granola Pot balances crunchy and sweet in a small bowl, but its price tag of $6.50 continues the cafe’s trend of overpriced items.

On the other hand, the cookies, croissants and muffins displayed near the register are a more economical choice. The blueberry muffin, cheaper than the grab-and-go items, tastes surprisingly moist for sitting in a display case – perfect for students craving a small side for their coffee. Pret’s rich White Chicken Chili Soup is also worth its cost. Two people can easily share a small soup, and soups are accompanied by a bread roll that is softer and fresher than the baguette the sandwiches are served on.

Most notably, Pret does not charge extra for plant-based milks – an offer that is unheard of to coffee lovers in LA. Pret’s Organic Classic Blend Coffee stands out as a rich and smooth alternative to the mediocre black coffee found at ASUCLA establishments on campus. While this drink costs $3.95, specialty drinks such as Sunshine Teas climb into the $6-7 range. If willing to indulge in a high-priced drink, customers with a sweet tooth will enjoy the sweet yet tart flavor of the Pink Guava Sunshine Green Tea.

Ordering drinks is straightforward, and the staff at Pret is willing to adjust add-ins such milk to the customer’s liking. However, the workflow of the front counter could use improvement, as the organization of lines and drink pickup become confusing during busy hours. Specialty drinks are called out at the register when finished, which is easy to navigate in an empty cafe but difficult when the line is long.

Despite Pret’s tasty drinks and diversity of grab-and-go options, fans of the cafe will be disappointed to discover that Westwood’s Pret has not unleashed the chain’s famous coffee subscription program. “Club Pret,” which allows participating members to cash out up to five drinks a day and redeem a 20% discount on Pret’s menu, received acclaim from coffee lovers worldwide. However, it is not yet available on the West Coast. Pret’s appeal to college students would skyrocket with the subscription’s introduction.

Pret caters its ambience to students through the clean and bright study atmosphere and calming music that supplements the ease of grabbing a quick bite. Though tables are in high demand, it is not impossible to find somewhere to study or chat with a friend among the cafe’s traditional tables, window-side counters and comfortable chairs. Within weeks, Pret will become a favorite study spot for many students through its variety and convenience.

Whether for a quick bite or a coffee-fueled study session, Pret will quickly become a Westwood staple.
