Postdoctoral scholars and academic researchers represented by the United Auto Workers Local 5810 union voted to ratify a new contract with the University of California on Friday, ending their nearly month-long strike.

Their UAW bargaining teams reached tentative agreements with the UC on Nov. 29 and began voting on whether to accept the contract Monday, according to a UAW press release. 89.4% of postdoctoral scholars and 79.5% of academic researchers voted in favor of ratification.

The new contracts will provide scaled salary increases over the next five years, with academic researchers receiving an average increase of 34% and postdoctoral scholars receiving a maximum increase of 57%. Both units will also receive eight weeks of paid family and parental leave with full compensation and will have further protections from abusive conduct.

The other UAW units, including those for teaching assistants and graduate student researchers, agreed to begin private, third-party negotiations with the UC on Friday after failing to come to a tentative contract agreement in previous bargaining sessions. These academic workers will remain on strike as they have been since Nov. 14., and union and University officials have agreed to not publicly discuss the mediation process until it is finalized.

“We will continue standing together with our Academic Student Employee and Student Researcher colleagues until they win the contracts they deserve,” said Mia Villegas, assistant psychological sciences specialist at UC Irvine and a member of the academic researcher bargaining team, in the UAW press release.
