As of around 1:15 p.m., members of UPTE-CWA 9119 started loading picket signs, tents, tables and chairs into a truck. Only around 30 members of the union were still outside of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
The third day of the UPTE-CWA 9119 strike concluded around 1 p.m. as demonstrators chanted, “We’ll be back.” The crowd slowly dispersed as music played and organizers passed out remaining food.
Ursula Quinn, the executive vice president of UPTE-CWA 9119 and an occupational therapist at the inpatient adult psychiatric unit at UCLA, criticized UCLA’s choice to highlight its status as the No. 1 public university in the nation.
“I see that little asterisk they have on there (the No. 1 public university banners),” Quinn said. “That asterisk is a reminder – number one, except for how they treat their workers, except for how they try to stop us from speaking out.”
Members of UPTE-CWA 9119 shared testimonials outside of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center at 12:45 p.m. Isabel Velasquez, a clinical social worker from UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, emphasized the need for higher pay and better support for staff in her speech.
“We are ones who comfort those in crisis, fight for justice and work tirelessly to create a better society for all,” she said in the speech. “Despite our immense responsibility, our dedication and our sacrifices, we are not treated with the respect we deserve.”
At 11:53 a.m., UPTE-CWA 9119 picketers returned to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, chanting “When we fight, we win,” and “Who runs UC? We run UC.”
Around 150 UPTE-CWA 9119 picketers reached Bruin Plaza around 11:25 a.m. and chanted, “Who has the power? Union power” and “Who’s university? Our university.”
Picketers then left Bruin Plaza around 11:30 a.m. and began marching towards Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.
At 10:54 a.m., UPTE-CWA 9119 picketers at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center began marching towards Bruin Plaza chanting, “If they don’t bargain, shut it down” and “Who runs UC? We run UC.”
In a post on its Instagram, UPTE says its strike is “One day longer, one day stronger.” UPTE represents professional and technical employees and is trying to advocate against what it sees as unfair labor practices in its last day of the UC-wide strike.

Security is stationed outside the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center parking lot, and hospital patients are advised to plan ahead and allocate extra time for traveling. UPTE-CWA 9119 has scheduled picketing to take place today from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the hospital.
UCLA Health hospitals aim to stay open and operational during the union strike, according to the organization’s website. While the hospitals are still open, delays are expected due to extra traffic and limited staff.
