The Daily Bruin covers breaking news relevant to the UCLA community as it happens. This page is covering the April 1 strike by the University Professional and Technical Employees-Communications Workers of America 9119, which represents research and technical workers. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 – which represents patient care, service and skilled craft workers – is also striking in solidarity with UPTE-CWA 9119.
As of 7:37 p.m., around 15 people waited to enter Epicuria at Covel. The strike will end Tuesday evening and dining operations are expected to return to normal Wednesday morning.
As of 7:11 p.m., the line at FEAST at Rieber had over 80 people in it. Lines for the food trucks at Rieber, Pinch of Flavor and Fat Boys, also continued to grow. UCLA also temporarily hosted a “Taco Tuesday” event in Rieber Court, but the event had finished as of 7:15 p.m.
In addition to Epicuria at Covel, De Neve Dining Hall and FEAST at Rieber, three food trucks – 8E8 Thai Street Food, El Gallo Yucateco and Vchos Pupuseria Moderna – are open at Sproul, and two food trucks, Fat Boys and Pinch of Flavor, are open at Rieber. There were no lines outside FEAST as of 5:04 p.m.
Betty Yee, the former California state controller and a candidate for California governor in 2026, and Fiona Ma, the California state treasurer, spoke at the strike. Yee said she wanted to show solidarity, adding that if she were governor, she would encourage the UCs to bargain with their unions in good faith.
“It’s really important for the workers to show up,” Yee said. “Tell your story because people really don’t know the human element … who’s at the other end of the services they provide, and they do so much more than just providing the services in which they have expertise in a discipline in. It’s very much about how we keep the entire Los Angeles community healthy and informed about what’s going on with their health care.”
Most UPTE-CWA 9119 members have dispersed for the day as of 2 p.m. Members have continued loading a truck with picket signs, tables and more from their setup outside of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Some remaining members are dancing to the music of the mariachi band.

As of 1:51 p.m., the mariachi band outside of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center was still performing. UPTE-CWA 9119 members have begun collecting picket signs and banners, as well as folding tables.
Jeanna Harris, a nurse and representative from UPTE-CWA 9119, said she went on strike today because the UC continues to not bargain with the union. She added that the University has been attempting to silence workers by not allowing newly accredited members to bargain.
Around 1:30 pm, AFSCME Local 3299 demonstrators chanted, “We’ll be back tomorrow,” as they began marching back toward Bruin Plaza from the Meyer and Renee Luskin Conference Center.
As of 1:23 p.m., there is no line outside Epicuria at Covel. Students are moving in and out of the dining hall efficiently while dining staff serves them.
Around 1:15 p.m., picketers for UPTE-CWA 9119 marched on Charles E. Young Drive South, chanting, “Everywhere we go, people wanna know who we are, so we tell them: We are the Union, the mighty, mighty Union, fighting for justice and patient care,” and, “All day, all night, UPTE on strike.”
