The Laker Girls attracted attention. So did former Los Angeles
mayor Richard Riordan.
But Saturday morning, a huge crowd gathered at Drake Stadium not
just to see the Laker Girls perform or to hear Riordan speak, but
to celebrate a small group of people who had one thing in common:
They were all cancer survivors.
Early Sunday morning, a lively crowd of 200 gathered near the
Intramural Field. By 6:30 a.m., the sun was barely rising above
Royce Hall and the grass was wet with dew as participants busily
stretched, checked their bikes, and numbered their arms with
permanent markers.
First-year world arts and cultures student Jennifer Zhao knows
what she is looking forward to winter quarter after the Gloria
Kaufman Hall is completed: She’ll have “an extra 10
minutes of sleep in place of walking.”
For others in the department, the new facility in Wilson Plaza
will build a sense of community, both within the department and
with the larger UCLA campus.
