Although the 2019-2020 year finished with the cancellations of the remaining seasons for many UCLA teams, there were still inspiring performances by athletes competing in the blue and gold.
Junior utility Kinsley Washington said the first inning was like a nine-player relay race.
Except with a softball bat instead of a baton, and the only loser being the opposing pitcher’s ERA.
Driving along I-10 into Cathedral City, California, softball fans en route to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic saw a billboard.
It was an advertisement for the tournament, but it didn’t feature Team USA pitchers Monica Abbott or Rachel Garcia – both of whom have racked up their fair share of hardware over the years.
Redshirt junior outfielder Aaliyah Jordan performed an impromptu dugout interview with ESPN’s Beth Mowins amid a nine-run sixth inning against USF for UCLA.
“We call that ‘Bruin magic,’” Jordan said.
On this week’s episode of “Out of Bounds,” Sports editor Sam Connon and Daily Bruin senior staff Ryan Smith break down UCLA men’s basketball’s up and down weekend and what could lie ahead for the Bruins in the back half of Pac-12 play.
Nine months ago, graduate catcher Jenavee Peres and her 1-year-old son Levi were sitting in front of the television, watching UCLA’s journey to its 12th national championship unfold.
Junior transfer infielder Delanie Wisz was standing with her hand above her UCLA letters, staring at the Easton Stadium scoreboard, when it hit her.
“When we were on the (third base) line doing the national anthem I was like, ‘Oh, I’m really here,’” Wisz said.
Everyone in the Bruins’ lineup got on base – in just the first inning.
“A big part of the success of UCLA softball is strength throughout a lineup, and you got to see that this weekend,” said coach Kelly Inouye-Perez.
