For the second straight year, the number of UCLA applicants has
dropped, even though the University of California experienced a
record high of over 100,000 applicants for the 2005-2006 school
year.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s recent $111.7 billion budget
for the upcoming fiscal year includes constitutional amendments to
impose across-the-board spending cuts to help the state alleviate
an $8.1 billion shortfall.

Perhaps no item on the Nov. 2 ballot is more personal than the
Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative as the debate over funding
for stem cell research pits scientists and researchers against
political conservatives and religious groups.

The 1954 landmark court case Brown v. Board of Education called
for the end of racial segregation in education. Still, it is common
for students of similar backgrounds to practice a different kind of
segregation on campus ““ to converge together in the form of
ethnic-based student organizations or merely same race groups of
friends.

Department chairs of the UCLA College see the new budget compact
between the university and the state as a positive step toward
addressing their concerns about fee increases compared to previous
agreements, but are still skeptical about the compact’s
long-term effectiveness.

About 50 students marched in silence around the UCLA campus
Wednesday in commemoration of the 89th anniversary of the Armenian
Genocide by the Turkish government ““ which some countries,
including the United States, do not officially recognize.

A week of forums aimed at bringing together the community of
faith and the intellectual culture of the university started
earlier this week and will conclude Friday with an informal panel
discussion with the UCLA community.

Religious scholars from throughout the UCLA community widely
agreed Thursday that the violence portrayed in the hugely
successful “The Passion of the Christ” was
over-exaggerated and furthered misdirected anti-Semitic
behavior.
