Every society must exercise a corrective mechanism to punish
those who break the law, and to ensure such lawbreaking does not
continue to occur.
In the United States, some hope to accomplish this through
stricter incarceration laws.
Something’s rotten in Washington, D.C. The American
political system is drowning in a pool of bull. The ways in which
our country is dominated by wealthy special interests are numerous
enough to fill a dozen books, and The Bruin doesn’t pay me
enough to write that much (Actually, I don’t get paid at
all.) So here’s just one example.
The Jewish Student Union base budget appeal has once again put
the process of student group funding under scrutiny. Although JSU
certainly provides valuable programming to the student body and
merits Undergraduate Students Association Council funding, the
Judicial Board should not alter JSU’s funding status.
While many undergraduates may not realize it, research is one of
the major ways universities like UCLA bring in revenue and enhance
their reputations. As a result, professors and graduate students
must devote considerable time and effort to this endeavor.
In recent years, UCLA students have watched many businesses
leave Westwood, shopping choices become more limited, and the
college town character increasingly fade into history. In light of
these trends, the recent project approval of Palazzo Westwood
apartments and retail center will have major consequences for
Westwood.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger recently released his new state
budget and detailed his plans for possible fee increases in higher
education.
The governor’s budget is both a product of unfair federal
tax policies that have deprived California of necessary revenue,
and a product of political leadership that fails to consider the
benefits of small tax increases.
Words can be weapons. Which is why Lt. Gen William G.
“Jerry” Boykin’s comments are so troubling.
Boykin, who is one of the key figures in the war on terrorism,
has repeatedly made questionable comments when discussing the
various conflicts in which the United States is involved in the
Middle East.
