They work seven days a week, 24 hours a day and go to school
fulltime.
That may not seem humanly possible, but with a part-time
property managing job it’s practically true.

The mixed support and condemnation that erupted this past week
when 180 professors made their personal opinions on the war widely
known to the public mirrors the wide range of feelings about
whether professors should express their political opinions inside
the classroom.

The lecturers’ union has been saying all year that it
planned to strike at UCLA ““ first in January and then in
April ““ to put pressure on the University of California at
the bargaining table.

From San Diego to Sacramento, hundreds of University of
California workers took to the streets Wednesday to voice their
dissatisfaction with the UC’s labor contract
negotiations.

Faculty concern about a possible calendar switch from quarters
to semesters permeated the air at a campuswide town hall meeting
Monday.
The meeting was intended to clarify issues raised in a report
released by the Joint Academic Senate/Administrative Committee to
Study the Academic Calendar in November and then facilitate
discussion among students, staff and faculty in attendance.

Being an excellent employee isn’t enough to secure a job
these days amid shrinking state coffers and budget shortfalls.

Salima Nagji, a second-year psychology student who aspired to be
an attorney, died in a car accident in Orange County on Dec. 25.
She was 19.

Douglas Martin, a successful advocate for disabled people who
helped pass the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1988, died Friday.

To the relief of the university, lecturers and clerical workers
changed their minds and elected to come to work every day this
month.
The lecturers’ union threatened a systemwide January
strike numerous times last quarter, but both unions formally
notified the UC last month they have no plans to strike in
January.

The state labor relations board delivered a double-punch to the
University of California last week, sending them back to the
bargaining table with its clericals’ union.
