Winning is a big part of John Wooden’s legacy. As his UCLA basketball teams dominated in the 1960s and 1970s, his name became synonymous with success.

In the spring of 1970, John Sandbrook was a UCLA student writing for this newspaper. That same spring, John Wooden was celebrating his sixth national title. Wooden was, by that point, one of the most recognizable figures in college sports, widely considered the greatest basketball coach in the world.
