In the marquee battle on Tuesday’s statewide primary
election ballot, state Treasurer Phil Angelides held a slight edge
over Controller Steve Westly for the Democratic gubernatorial
nomination as election results trickled in Tuesday night.

Inside, it was about terrorism. Outside, it was all
politics.
Just before Rep. Jane Harman, D-Venice, was scheduled to speak
at the Faculty Center on Thursday as part of a symposium on
terrorism in the U.S.

As the university struggles through a compensation controversy
that mirrors one from 1992, the UC Board of Regents is attempting
not only to repair the damage already done, but also institute
solutions that will prevent future recurrences in a way they were
unable to in the early 1990s.

Though the numbers of minorities have increased in University of
California faculty in recent decades, diversity remains a pressing
issue for many UC leaders.
The UC President’s Task Force on Faculty Diversity,
composed of 11 UC academic and administrative leaders, presented
the findings of its recent report at the President’s Summit
on Faculty Diversity in Oakland on Tuesday.

SAN FRANCISCO “”mdash; The UC Board of Regents affirmed its
support for President Robert Dynes during the board’s meeting
Thursday and pledged to move forward as the regents attempt to
repair the university’s compensation system that has been at
the heart of an ongoing controversy.

SAN FRANCISCO “”mdash; In one of the most significant meetings
the UC Board of Regents has held in recent years, the
university’s governing body on Wednesday conducted its most
complete and direct discussion on record of the compensation
scandal that has weighed on the University of California since last
fall.

The UC Board of Regents meets every other month with little
fanfare, but when the regents meet this week, more eyes than usual
will likely be focused on them.

Several blocks southwest of campus were closed Thursday
afternoon while hazardous materials crews investigated the contents
of a truck carrying containers filled with unidentified industrial
chemicals.
