When Carrie Martell had to teach marine biology to American
Indian students at the Torres Martinez Tribal TANF community center
on Wilshire Boulevard, she built a lesson on knowledge typically
absent from the average high school textbook.

Raised by a Vietnamese Buddhist mother, Amie McCampbell never
felt alienated from Buddhism. An altar with the Buddha’s
likeness permanently sat in her parents’ home, she attended
pagodas and wore a necklace with a tiny gold Buddha for years
during high school.

In many ways, Melissa McClenning, Charles Kim, James Lee and
Angela Yoon are just regular students – attending classes, worrying
about midterms and papers.
But unlike their peers, many of whom will later seek jobs or
pursue professional degrees, these five will be officers in the
United States Army when they graduate from UCLA.

On the heavily-populated UCLA campus, where an open parking
space has become almost an illusion, students are in need of better
transportation options to be mobile around Los Angeles.

The recent trend of naming campus buildings after donors rather
than faculty or prominent members of the UCLA community reflects
UCLA’s dependence on private donations because of a lack of
state funding.

One year after the fateful events of Sept. 11, 2001, leaders of
the UCLA and Los Angeles communities are asking people honor those
