Twenty-five years ago, UCLA students made a commitment to honor
coach John Wooden.
Following the 10 national championships he brought to UCLA in a
12-year span, students and university officials pushed for a
“Wizard of Westwood” legacy.

Coming off its Pac-10 Championship last weekend, the top-ranked
UCLA gymnastics team awaits the NCAA South Central Regional
Championship meet on Saturday, April 12 in Columbia, Mo.

The end of the “Fab Five” era comes at a time when
the Bruins are the most dominant team in collegiate gymnastics. The
No. 1 Bruins continue to lead the nation in every single event.

Simply put, the Bruins (11-1-1) are on fire. The team’s
197.250-196.775 win at No. 10 Michigan last Friday showed UCLA in
championship form and prepared for the postseason.

The new vault used in NCAA competition this year is giving the
Bruin gymnasts (10-1-1) an advantage their opponents already fear:
confidence.

The No. 1 UCLA gymnastics team (9-1-1) will host No. 16 Arizona
(4-5) this Sunday in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins hope to build on
what has been an impressive season, as the team has posted an
average score of 197.253 thus far.

Freshman Kate Richardson insists that a tough preseason and a
disciplined mind-set are two factors that have led the No. 3 Bruins
(7-1) to their success thus far this season as they take on No.

The UCLA gymnastics team has experienced its first real setback
of the year ““ a loss.
For most teams, a loss helps reestablish competitive spirit and
goals, but this one against No.

Senior Onnie Willis was recently named the Pac-10 Gymnast of the
Week, marking the third time she has been awarded the prestigious
designation.
Willis has performed well for the Bruins this year and is coming
off an especially impressive all-around score in the team’s
home opener last Sunday.

The UCLA women’s gymnastics team acheived one of its
season goals last week when it beat Utah in Salt Lake City. The
Utes can no longer claim the nation’s longest win streak,
which they had maintained for 23 years at the Hunstman Center.
