The UCLA men’s golf team ended Monday’s first round of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Columbus, Ohio, in third place.

For most college students around the country, summer is a time to kick back, relax and enjoy some time to themselves. Don’t count the UCLA men’s golf team as part of that group.

Heading into this year with a No. 1 preseason ranking, five golfers ranked in Golfweek’s Top 50, a team that only lost one player from last year’s championship roster and a coach in Carrie Forsyth who has won two national championships during her time at UCLA, expectations are high.

Led by freshman Patrick Cantlay and junior Gregor Main, the UCLA men’s golf team moved two strokes closer to first place after the second round of the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Okla., on Wednesday.

For the UCLA men’s golf team, this is it. This is what the season comes down to. This is the NCAA Championships.

The NCAA regionals are anything other than just another tournament. But if you were to talk to both players and coaches on the UCLA men’s golf team, you might get the impression that they were headed for just that.
