Long a contested topic among students and professors alike,
pass/no pass grading has once again become a topic of conversation
as its fall deadline approaches.
Students first hear about this option in summer orientation
where their counselors explain that the pass/no pass grading option
is designed to allow students the opportunity to explore classes
outside their area of expertise while still allowing them to get
credit for their work.

In their final days as students on the UCLA campus, many of
those graduating grow nostalgic about the time they’ve spent
as Bruins. Fond memories of dorms, finals, 500 helpings of Panda
Express and games against rival USC are among the mix.

As finals week approaches and students’ time at the
library often stretches into the early morning hours, many may be
forced to make the late-night walk back to dorms and apartments
alone.

Renee Crug is preparing for finals. Like the people around her,
this third-year English student is busy filling her eighth week
with the normal tasks associated with end-of-quarter academics.

The Nikkei Student Union hosted 34 teams this weekend in the
Yuji Ichioka Memorial Basketball Tournament held in Pauley
Pavilion.
The 12th annual tournament, previously called the “shoot
out,” was renamed last year after the death of Asian American
activist Yuji Ichioka, one of the founders of the Asian American
Studies Center.

Doctor Edward McCabe’s goal at the Mattel Children’s
Hospital is to “look after the whole child,” ensuring
that youths’ emotional and mental needs are cared for along
with their physical ailments.

After serving in Ackerman Union since September 1996, Pulse Copy
center will be closing its doors at the end of this quarter.
Jane Osborne, the store’s general manager for the past
seven years, said she is sad to see Pulse leave UCLA.

Tiffany Kim, a first-year undeclared student, leaves her room to
study. Kim, a resident of Rieber Hall, says she cannot study in the
heat of her non-air conditioned room.

Rosemary Park Anastos, a former UCLA vice chancellor, remembered
by many as a highly intelligent, passionate individual with a wry
sense of humor, died April 17 in her Los Angeles home.

The last of four original UCLA buildings from 1929 to be
renovated since the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Kinsey Hall is set
to undergo a seismic upgrade this summer.
