The UCLA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Resource Center
dedicated its new library on Friday to a woman whose relationship
with the university spans decades.
Rae Lee Siporin, former director of UCLA admissions and
co-founder of the UCLA LGBT Faculty-Staff Network, was recognized
for her impact on the university’s LGBT community, an effect
many say is still experienced today by students and faculty.
Katherine Baicker was appointed as an associate professor of
public policy at the UCLA School of Public Affairs in July, but
before she could step into the classroom, she was presented with an
offer she could not refuse.
It is a Friday evening deep in the heart of South Campus, and
rather than heading into Westwood to catch the latest movie or grab
a bite to eat, biomedical researchers are reviewing academic
journal articles and designing research projects.
Fifty thousand rare books normally housed at UCLA’s
William Andrews Clark Memorial Library will find refuge on the
shelves of the UC Southern Regional Library Facility on the UCLA
campus while their regular residence is renovated this year.

Student supporters of a general education diversity requirement
have fought for the past 18 years to get the requirement
implemented, but after failing yet again in a faculty vote last
fall, campaigners are turning up their volumes.
