Students living in Sproul Hall were locked out of their
residence building for about 25 minutes Wednesday afternoon due to
a minor construction mishap.
A contractor working on the renovation of Sproul Hall hit a
sprinkler head during construction at about 11:45 a.m., setting off
the sprinkler system and fire alarm.
A white van of medical supplies pulls up to the corner of
Sycamore Avenue and Romaine Street on Wednesday evening. Within an
hour, the sidewalk is transformed into a makeshift clinic, complete
with two exam rooms set up from tarps and army cots, and three
tables to hold medical files, provide referrals, and distribute
free hygiene kits.
A report card released by UCLA’s Institute of the
Environment gave Southern California’s control of
“smart growth” and marine conservation efforts
B-minuses. However, the same report indicated that the region is
doing poorly in the areas of air quality and controlling invasive
plant species, which received a C- and a D, respectively.
Despite the fact the number of minority students in colleges and
universities has doubled over the past 20 years, white students
still comprise the majority of enrolled students in the country,
according to a report released last week by the American Council on
Education.
Housing fee increases have doubled this year due to the
construction of the new Rieber North, Rieber West and Hedrick North
residence halls.
Fees increased by 7 to 8 percent from the previous year; last
year the increase was between 3 and 4 percent.
The sound of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and Vox

Plaza on Wednesday evening, kicking off the grand opening
celebration of the newly located Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender
campus resource center.
