UCLA’s Music of Brazil ensemble is finally official.
Throughout last year, the ensemble had met weekly under the
direction of Latin American Studies M.A. graduate student Beto
Gonzalez to practice Brazilian music as an informal group.
Over 200 bodies clashed and sweated until 2 a.m. in a tireless
mosh pit as the band El Gran Silencio jammed and danced live for
three hours at JC Fandango’s in Anaheim earlier this
month.
“Let me see your teeth.”
This is what Carlton Green asked 40 kindergarteners early Friday
morning.
Green, director of nutrition at the UCLA Medical Center’s
Nutrition Department, had passed around false teeth to explain to
the children ““ some grossed out ““ that if they did not
eat right their teeth would look like the decayed teeth they were
holding in their hands.
Thirty years of Chicanos/as working together to create art and
educate others about cultural history will be exhibited in a series
titled “Revolution/Evolution” at Self Help Graphics
& Art located in East Los Angeles.
Walking through Schoenberg Music Building on a Thursday night
you might hear Brazilian drums grooving. What you’d be
hearing is the Brazilian Percussion Workshop and Ensemble organized
by Beto Gonzalez, departmental scholar in the Latin American
Studies department.

student and mariachi performer ever felt this way because Escalera
now devotes her life to the art form.
