Despite the departure of thrower Dan Ames, UCLA men’s
track and field coach Art Venegas is confident that his young squad
has the potential to fill the All-American’s giant shoes.
Carmen Winant wasn’t expected to vie for the seventh spot
on the UCLA women’s cross country “˜A’ team. But
with her solid 15th place finish at the Triton Invitational in San
Diego on Saturday, the senior earned the final spot on the roster
for the Pre-NCAA meet next weekend in Terre Haute, Ind.
After five years without representation at the NCAA Track and
Field Championship meet, one of UCLA’s relay teams is about
to make a long-awaited appearance. Qualifying for nationals in both
the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relays, the team elected to send
only its 4x400m team to Austin, Texas.
Instead of the normal congratulatory pat on the back, Dan Ames
received a bath. An ice bath, that is. After victorious
performances in the hammer throw, shot put and discus at the NCAA
West Regional Meet in Northridge, the senior thrower was all
smiles, even after being doused in celebration by his teammates.
Amid a sea of collegiate and professional throwers at the
Hartnell Throwers Meet, one Bruin athlete proved UCLA’s
future looks bright.
While often overshadowed by the accomplishments of senior
All-American Dan Ames, redshirt sophomore Jeremy Silverman’s
marks put him in position to lead the Bruin throwing corps once
Ames graduates.
