While a beating heart is buried within us all, senior gymnast
Kristen Maloney’s is beating a little stronger, very nearly
bursting out of her chest.
“She is an amazingly talented gymnast with the heart of a
lion,” UCLA coach Valorie Kondos Field said.
Oregon State came into Pauley Pavilion at a bad time.Â
After losing Friday to Cal State Fullerton, 194.275 to 193.6,
and posting the team’s lowest scoring total of the season in
the process, the third-ranked UCLA gymnastics team had something to
prove Sunday.
The third-ranked UCLA gymnastics team will take on Pac-10 foe
No. 7 Stanford at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday. Stanford and UCLA are
the only two teams to win the Pac-10 title in the last seven years,
including last year’s UCLA victory at Pauley Pavilion.
I know why people throw Super Bowl parties. It is for the same
reason winter is considered an extremely depressing season. This is
the season when, toward the end of January (or early February this
year), the world of sports goes into hibernation.
They weren’t many, but they were rowdy. Some of them came
with food, others left with it. The 1,108 fans who dismissed Super
Bowl Sunday for “Soup”-er Bowl Sunday saw UCLA
gymnastics record a 197.55 to defeat Cal State Fullerton and
Arizona State in a triangular meet.
After Sunday’s gymnastics meet at the University of
Minnesota, throngs of little girls lined up to get autographs from
the gymnasts. The young fans, though, were not only waiting
for autographs from their hometown heroes.Â
They were also waiting for the Bruins, who had readily agreed to
sit down alongside the Minnesota team for an autograph session
following the competition.Â
Besides leaving its mark on T-shirts and posters, the Bruins
left their mark on the Golden Gophers in a 197.55 to 195.325
performance.Â
There were plenty of aspects of Sunday’s meet that the
Bruins could have used as excuses had they faltered. However,
in keeping the same lineup on Sunday as she did against Georgia
last Monday, coach Valorie Kondos Field received a similar
performance to Monday’s high marks.Â
“It was important for us to go and put in the same lineup
we put in at Georgia, and one reason for that was to let them
improve on their performances from Monday,” Kondos Field
said.
