UCLA cross country traveled up to Seattle this weekend, taking part in the Washington Invitational hosted at the Jefferson Park Golf Course.
The 11th-ranked men’s team, which returned its top seven runners to start the season, finished in fourth-place overall.
Nicholas Scarvelis stepped onto the first-place podium after winning the shot put for the second consecutive season in the Pac-12 championship meet, defending his title but also searching to improve on his 64-5.25 showing.
Tatum Souza could hardly contain her excitement moments after throwing her second shot put attempt during the Pac-12 track and field multi-events.
On this particular throw, Souza stepped into the ring, collected herself and promptly uncorked the shot further than she had ever done in her track and field career with a lifetime best of 45-5.25.
UCLA track and field will have a shot at redemption this weekend.
After last Sunday’s dual meet loss to the Trojans, the Bruins are hoping for success during the first weekend of the Pac-12 championship at Drake Stadium, where USC athletes will once again be present.
As UCLA track and field began preparing for the final leg of its season this week, the Triton Invitational in San Diego helped the Bruins relieve some of the pressure they will face soon, all while showcasing their talents.
On the UCLA track and field website, there is a banner that rests atop the page. It reads: “2015 Pac-12 track and field championships, May 9-10 (multis) and May 16-17 – UCLA’s Drake Stadium.”
Just as the title and location of this event have assumed an elevated spot on the team’s website, it has also occupied a place in the forefront of the Bruins’ minds throughout the year.
For the second straight week, UCLA track and field had the opportunity to compete in the comforts of a home atmosphere in front of an audience that featured former UCLA track and field standout Rafer Johnson.
