Bob Knight is many things to many people. To some, the Texas
Tech coach is a college basketball icon, whose resume commands
respect. To others, he’s a man with a tremendous temper that
he’s unable to control.

The UCLA locker room was quiet after Thursday’s game.
That was because many of the Bruins didn’t know what to
say.
The smiles that adorned the faces of the Bruins just a week ago
were replaced with somber looks and furtive glances at the floor,
their confidence and their NCAA Tournament hopes shaken by a 79-72
loss to Oregon State in the first round of the Pac-10
Tournament.

Afflalo doesn’t expect it to be too tough of an
adjustment.
Yet, when the Bruins take the floor at Staples Center for their
match-up with Oregon State in the first round of the Pac-10
Tournament this afternoon, it nonetheless will be the first taste
of single-elimination play for UCLA’s prized freshmen this
season.

Though it was senior night for UCLA, an Oregon freshman captured
the greatest attention from the crowd in Pauley Pavilion
Saturday.
After the fans had their opportunity to cheer for Bruin seniors,
they quickly turned their attention to Malik Hairston.

Dijon Thompson after UCLA’s 75-65 win over Notre Dame at the
Joyce Center on Sunday.

Freshman Arron Afflalo said earlier in the week that he
wasn’t the kind of player to force shots in trying to find
his offense.
He didn’t need to on Thursday against USC because his
offense found him.

If its record alone isn’t enough, UCLA is banking on its
top-40 RPI as the trump card that could get it into the NCAA
Tournament next month.

BERKELEY “”mdash; UCLA coach Ben Howland made it clear to his
team that he wanted a change in his team’s perimeter-oriented
offense. He emphasized all week the necessity of making sure the
ball found its way to post, and that meant in junior Michael
Fey’s hands.
