The Associated Students of UCLA hosted a variety of activities
this week in its annual Welcome Week, drawing thousands of
participants to kick off a new school year.

The process to departmentalize the César E. Chávez
Center for Interdisciplinary Instruction in Chicana/o Studies, as
well as the Interdisciplinary Program for Asian American Studies,
has recently faced some unforeseen obstacles.

Chancellor Albert Carnesale announced a plan Thursday to launch
a $250 million fund-raising campaign over a five-year period to
attract and retain prestigious professors and graduate students at
UCLA.

Close to 300 are expected to march at noon tomorrow from Bruin
Plaza to Janss Steps to support a federal bill currently on the
floor of the Senate that would allow children of illegal immigrants
more opportunity in higher education.

African Student Union members rallied Monday in Bruin Plaza,
asserting that though segregation was officially banned 50 years
ago in the Brown v. Board of Education decision, it still has yet
to be effectively implemented.

Students will gather in Bruin Plaza today at noon to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme
Court decision, the termination of “separate but equal”
and a step toward desegregating public schools.

Wind rustles gently through the blossoming trees in the Rolfe
Sculpture Garden as undergraduates, graduates, alumni and
professors congregate and listen to people taking turns reading
George Eliot’s “Middlemarch” aloud.

One-third of California’s population has been scheduled to
“disappear” on May 14.
UCLA’s Chicano Studies Research Center hosted a free
preview of “A Day Without a Mexican” on Friday.
