University police are continuing an investigation of facilities
management, after an employee and a manager of a local tool shop
were both arrested in an alleged scheme involving the theft of
thousands of dollars worth of university tools.

On a scorching Friday afternoon, the UCLA Downtown Labor Center
seems bustling. There are meetings going on in different conference
rooms, members of a local union stream in and out, and the
directors and staff all seem to be working on different
projects.
After a 45-minute drive north through traffic on the 405 Freeway
along a labyrinth of other highways and roads winding away from
campus, about 12 undergraduates went to another class last
Wednesday ““ only this time they were the teachers.
University police will begin issuing $87 citations today for
drivers and passengers caught not buckling up during a period of
special police enforcement dubbed “Click it or
Ticket.”
“These next three weeks, we’re going to have
officers solely dedicated to actually looking for seat-belt
violators,” said Justin Mammen, who works in the UCPD
community services bureau.
During demonstrations Thursday morning in front of UCLA Medical
Center laboratories and buildings, about 15 animal rights
protestors asked, “Hey UCLA, what do you say? How many
animals did you kill today?”
The demonstration was organized by University Students for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals who argue UCLA is wasting
taxpayers’ dollars on the inhumane and unethical treatment of
animals used in laboratory experiments.
