A parchment of a new Torah was started at the Yitzhak Rabin
Hillel Center of Jewish Life at UCLA on Tuesday night.
In the opening ceremony, Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller, director of
the Center, introduced Rabbi Shmuel Miller, the scribe who will be
writing this Torah, and reflected on the meaning of the event.
During lunchtime in Ackerman Union, students pass an obviously
outdated sign in front of the Panda Express construction site which
reads, “Visit our newly remodeled store September
2004.”
The opening of the restaurant following its remodeling was
scheduled for the beginning of this quarter, but it has been
delayed due to problems complying with updated construction
codes.
Music fans gathered on the Intramural Field this weekend to
partake in the 18th Annual UCLA JazzReggae Festival.
The event, put together by a sub-committee of the Cultural
Affairs Commission, featured jazz artists on Sunday and reggae
artists on Monday.
Students, parents and staff gathered to celebrate this
year’s recipients of the Charles E. Young Humanitarian Award
in the Kerckhoff Grand Salon on Monday afternoon.
The award is designed “to recognize and promote the value
of community service to all forms of education,” said Vice
Chancellor of Student Affairs Janina Montero, who gave the
introductory speech and introduced the recipients.
Over a thousand people came out early Sunday morning to
participate in the fifth-annual UCLA Run/Walk, a fund-raiser for
the Mattel Children’s Hospital.
The run/walk is organized by a committee of the Student Welfare
Commission to raise money for the hospital’s child life/child
development program.
