When all is said and done, where do you draw the line between
comedy and blatant offensiveness?
Here’s where I’m drawing it.
The February issue of Vanity Fair Magazine which features the
lovely Salma Hayek on the cover, contains an advice column titled
“Ask Dame Edna.” Now, I love satire and comedy as much
as the next person.
To ensure the best possible education for students, we must have
a racially diverse faculty. If two professors are competing for a
position, and one is well qualified and would help diversify the
faculty, while the other is a person who is not of color but
considered more qualified, I believe the professor who is a
minority should get the position because he may actually be the
better person for the job.
All women face the same impossible aesthetic standards and have
experienced pain when these standards cannot be met.
But we don’t lift one another up and remind each other
that we do not have to meet these standards to be successful, happy
or loved.
