Democrat Brian Goldsmith will represent California’s 24th State Senate District, which includes UCLA’s campus and surrounding communities, the Associated Press announced Friday.
Goldsmith received 56.6% of the vote in the Tuesday midterm election, beating democrat John Erickson, who received 43.4% of the vote as of Friday, according to the AP. Erickson and Goldsmith moved on from the June 2 primary election after receiving more votes than eight other candidates.

Goldsmith will succeed incumbent Democrat Ben Allen, who reached his term limit and was ineligible to seek reelection. Allen ran for California commissioner of insurance in the 2026 midterm election.
Goldsmith, a media consultant, campaigned on affordability and fighting against antisemitism in California, according to his campaign website. He also wants to implement greater protections against gun violence.
“From day one, this campaign was built on a simple promise: to listen to residents, bring people together, and deliver common sense solutions to our state’s toughest challenges,” Goldsmith said in a Thursday press release. “I salute John Erickson for a hard fought contest and look forward to collaborating with him.”
Erickson, currently a West Hollywood city council member, campaigned on addressing affordability issues, providing more housing and supporting communities through wildfire recovery, according to his campaign website. He planned to fight against climate change, improve public safety and expand access to affordable healthcare.
The California Federation of Labor Unions, the California Teachers Association and California Treasurer Fiona Ma endorsed Erickson.
Goldsmith was endorsed by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi and CAL FIRE Local 2881.
“In Sacramento, I will bring the same collaborative approach to addressing the drivers of unaffordability like housing and child care, fighting for our environment and our entertainment jobs, improving schools, and making real progress on homelessness,” Goldsmith said in the press release. “I am excited to get to work.”
Erickson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the results.
