A new platform is aiming to help UCLA students swap enrollment stress for smoother schedules.

Joseph Borna, a fifth-year history student, created ClassSwap over the summer to connect students looking to exchange classes and allow users to share course recommendations and feedback.

Course insights can be categorized by metrics such as grading difficulty, workload, pace and attendance requirements. Students can upload the class they are currently enrolled in alongside their desired class with information detailing the discussion section number, professor and location.

“If we’re both in a section we’re unhappy with, maybe we can find a way to meet or drop each other’s courses and find a way to exchange sections in a way while abiding UCLA’s code of conduct,” he said.

Borna said he had to pay an extra quarter’s worth of tuition to take his last history course, which he was unable to enroll in last spring. He added that he hopes the platform helps students graduate on time and meet their educational goals.

Maya Borna, Joseph Borna’s mother, said she manages ClassSwap’s social media and meets with students to promote the software. She was proud to see her son follow through with the idea, she added.

“He was very responsible, and he was on top of things, and he was checking with me, and he was updating me all the time,” Maya Borna said. “I saw more of an adult of him than I did as my son.”

Elior Borna, a UCLA alumnus and Joseph Borna’s sister, said she helped him create the ClassSwap website and gave him advice on the interface and logo design. She added that she was impressed by how quickly her brother created the website.

“If he had any questions, I was there for him, but really it was 100% my brother,” Elior Borna said. “This is a website created by Bruins for Bruins.”

Although ClassSwap focuses on UCLA, it can also be used on other college campuses, including Santa Monica College and the University of Southern California, Joseph Borna said.

While building the platform, Joseph Borna said he looked at other platforms that give students insight into classes and professors – such as Bruinwalk and Rate My Professors – to identify ways to build on those features.

Students often take classes not applicable to their degree program because there are no other options, Elior Borna said. As a commuter student, she often had to make multiple trips to and from campus each day because she couldn’t get the right classes that worked with her schedule.

“UCLA students really want to fit all their classes into a few days, so they don’t have to keep coming back to UCLA every few hours,” Elior Borna said. “ClassSwap is really going to help with that.”

Joseph Borna, who transferred from Santa Monica College, said transfer students are often overlooked in their struggle to obtain classes.

“ClassSwap can be the platform that can help guide you through that (enrollment) – hold your hand through the upcoming quarters and help you find your path to graduate, … help you out so that you can progress through higher education,” he said.
