UCLA football (2-0) has opened the 2026 season with its best start to a campaign since 2023 and now has the opportunity to go undefeated through three games as it faces Purdue (1-1) Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins are entering Big Ten play in their third season in the conference and coach Bob Chesney’s debut in a Power Four match. Here are the game predictions from Sports editor Jacob Nguyen and Sports senior staffer Kai Dizon, as well as a guest prediction from Slot editor Barnett Salle-Widelock.

Prediction: UCLA 31, Purdue 24

Just three days ago, UCLA Athletics announced that football tickets would be free for all students – unfortunate timing for someone like myself, who never got to benefit from such a luxury in my first two years in Westwood and no longer cares to take advantage considering the position I’m now in.

But, if anything, the Bruins have given the rest of the blue and gold faithful a plethora of reasons to pack the Rose Bowl – this time at no cost.

Except probably the commute.

Nonetheless, UCLA has shown that it can win when it matters most. Against California, it was a 24-24 stalemate entering the fourth quarter before scoring 21 unanswered. Against San Diego State, it was a pair of donuts at halftime before UCLA posted 28 points in just 30 minutes, with another 21 in the final frame.

I’m sure Chesney knows that that level of play is unsustainable considering the start of conference play. And while the Big Ten slate opens against a team that was winless against conference opponents last year, Purdue isn’t necessarily a team to count out, especially considering its 40 points per game average through two matches, including a double overtime shootout against Wake Forest.

With a Bruin offense that has already rushed for more touchdowns than it did all last season set to meet a Boilermaker defense that has allowed under 130 rushing yards per game so far, one might liken this matchup to the classic paradox of an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.

Well, maybe exactly that when considering two of the Big Ten’s worst teams last season, but the point stands.

Nico Iamaleava is aware that he hasn’t had the start he hoped to, having yet to throw a touchdown compared to two interceptions. But Purdue’s inability to stop mobile quarterbacks – giving up 58 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns to Wake Forest’s Gio Lopez – bodes well for the senior quarterback, who likely has the opportunity to flash one of his best traits.

While hits to the wide receiver room don’t bode well for Iamaleava’s pass-catching options, don’t get it twisted, because Purdue’s loose coverage has fallen victim to surrendering over 15 yards per catch through its first two matches.

Simply put, the Bruins should be able to exploit exactly what the Boilermakers are worst at.

Prediction: UCLA 45, Purdue 9

The Bruins are going to beat the Boilermakers because I barely know what a Boilermaker is.

Still, I’d assume saying someone played against plumbers and boilermakers would hurt their GOAT argument. Likewise, a win against Purdue may not change how the country views UCLA. If it isn’t a blowout, the Bruins could even be seen as worse than they are.

What I do know is that UCLA is 2-0 and that’s better than Purdue’s 1-1.

Quarterback Ryan Browne has completed 77.5% of his passes for 646 yards across his two games this season, and he lost to Wake Forest a week ago.

Boilermakers running back Fame Ijeboi had 114 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns Saturday, and his team still lost.

The Bruins have won largely without senior quarterback Nico Iamaleava playing to his ability. They’ve won handily despite their starting signal caller registering two interceptions to zero passing touchdowns.

Purdue might even lose if you put Drew Brees under center.

Prediction: UCLA 31, Purdue 17

UCLA has – like any good struggling program should – given its fans tantalizing glimpses of hope over the last few seasons, only to snatch them away with offensive line struggles and an abysmal ground game.

Incredibly, those flashes are crystallizing into something real. The Bruins have shown, on top of increased talent, an ability to outlast opponents that feels like the biggest inversion from recent UCLA teams.

Chesney’s squad has now won out in back-to-back games where the teams were tied at halftime. Such situations would have been a disappointing omen in recent years, but UCLA’s newly developed tendency to fight down the stretch is what will lead it to success throughout the season and against Purdue.

Opposite the Bruins’ demonstrated endurance, the Boilermakers are coming off a heart-wrenching loss to Wake Forest, having mounted a valiant fourth-quarter comeback only to be bested in double overtime. Unfortunately, defeat is familiar in West Lafayette, with Purdue winning just four games since 2023 – three of which were against FCS teams.

On this alone, UCLA is a strong favorite over its conference competitor. While the stats show a fairly even matchup – with Purdue and UCLA putting up roughly similar yardage numbers so far – the Bruins have taken on stronger opponents, and their running back corps has shown itself to be a fearsome threat that this weekend’s opponent could struggle to contain.

The thing UCLA fans may have to watch out for is Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne, who has tossed a Big Ten-leading 646 yards through two games for four touchdowns and no interceptions this season. The junior will be throwing towards a tough defense, however – one that smothered SDSU last weekend and allowed only 45 Aztec yards in the air.

All in all, this game – which will bring a Rose Bowl packed with students and their free tickets – should lean towards UCLA. If nothing disastrous occurs, another brick in a Bruin tower of hope will be placed Saturday.
