The North Westwood Neighborhood Council elected two board members and passed a community impact statement in support of taxing future Olympic ticket purchases at its July meeting.

The council, which represents UCLA and Westwood Village, meets on the first Wednesday of every month throughout the year at UCLA’s Weyburn Terrace. People can attend the council’s meetings in person or virtually using the link posted on the corresponding agenda.

Comments made by public officials:

  • Janet Turner, the deputy district director of outreach for Rep. Ted Lieu, said Lieu introduced the 21st Century Federal Writers Project Act, which would create a new federal grant program for writers and journalists, and the Keeping Pets and Families Together Act, which encourages the microchipping of dogs and cats adopted from shelters.
  • Alexandra Dildine, the field representative for California State Assembly member Rick Chavez Zbur, said Zbur sponsored 12 bills that passed the state assembly, including the Fair Share in Energy Act, which directs the California Public Utilities Commission to create a new classification and tariff for artificial intelligence data centers.
  • Henry Houser, an intern for state Sen. Ben Allen’s office, said Allen authored Senate Bill 1301, which would require property insurers to provide a notice of nonrenewal 90 days in advance, and Senate Bill 501, which would require manufacturers to recycle mid-size batteries. Houser added that Allen is running for state insurance commissioner.
  • Erica Gatica Doughty, an advocate for EmpowerLA, said people can submit nominations for the Joy P. Atkinson Excellence Award to recognize neighborhood councils’ impactful work. She added that the election division of the city clerk’s office will host information sessions to prepare for neighborhood council elections in early November.
  • Carmen Zambrano, assistant director of local government and community relations for UCLA Government Relations, said Sustainable Bruin Move Out, which focuses on limiting waste during move-out at the end of UCLA’s academic year, was held June 11. She added that the program helped students collect 6,600 pounds of usable items during move-out. Zambrano said UCPD is also participating in the National Night Out event in Westwood to promote community between police and residents on Aug. 4, featuring food and activities for children.
