Momentum is defined in physics as the product of mass and velocity.

But for UCLA softball, it looks like a 19-game win streak.

No. 7 UCLA softball (25-3, 6-0 Big Ten) will take on another Big Ten opponent in Rutgers (16-12, 3-3), at the Rutgers Softball Complex in Piscataway from March 21 to March 23.

As the Bruins travel across the country for their first away conference series this season, they may carry the momentum from a dominant start of their 2026 campaign with them.

The team has outscored its opponents 318-119 across the first 28 games and has particularly flashed its offensive firepower.

The offense’s success can largely be attributed to the “Bruin Bomber” duo of seniors utility Megan Grant and infielder Jordan Woolery.

“Megan and Jordan set a great example. I mean, they’re like professional hitters, the way they approach it, the way they go about their bats,” said Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez.

Grant leads the team in both batting average and home runs, with .541 and 21, respectively. She broke the UCLA record for reaching 20 home runs in the fewest amount of games, hitting the threshold in just 26 contests. The previous record stood at 43 games.

Her Bruin Bomber counterpart follows right behind her, boasting a .530 batting average with 18 home runs. She has hit a team-leading 10 doubles throughout the 2026 campaign and also leads the team in runs batted in with 60.

Woolery embraces her role of being in between Grant and sophomore infielder Kaniya Bragg. The Walnut Creek, California, local said she trusts her teammates to take the stress off of her shoulders.

“It makes it easy to do my job, especially when Megan’s doing such a great job in front of me, being patient, being disciplined, not being too greedy with her at bats,” Woolery said. “Kaniya is doing a great job of taking advantage of both me and Meg being on base too so it makes it easy for me not trying to do too much, just be myself, see good pitches and hit.”

With much attention being on the Bruin Bombers, people may forget about the Bruins’ additional lineup weapons. Sophomore outfielder Rylee Slimp bats in the lead off spot, boasting a .425 batting average with a team-leading 45 runs. Slimp also has worn the most pitches, getting hit 11 times throughout the season.

Redshirt freshman infielder Aleena Garcia boasts a .361 batting average and 26 hits. Bragg has the third-highest batting average with a .433 mark and the second-highest hit total with 39. Redshirt junior designated player/infielder Ramsey Suarez holds a .364 average with 20 hits. Freshman infielder Bri Alejandre has been a standout freshman for the team, batting a .333 clip with 27 hits.

When a team performs so well in the batters box, it often makes their teammates’ job in the circle a lot easier. Despite struggling throughout the first part of the 2026 campaign, UCLA’s pitching has faced few consequences thanks to the squad’s offensive performance.

Senior pitcher Taylor Tinsley has a 2.82 ERA while allowing an opposing batting average of .259. She leads the pitching rotation with 14 wins and just two losses to her name. Tinsley has also pitched in 82 innings across 12 starts, often coming in out of the bullpen when needed.

“Been feeling good. It’s great having our lineup behind my back, so feeling confident every time I step on the mound, knowing that they’re gonna have my back no matter what,” Tinsley said. “Same thing with the defense as well. I feel like we have a really good flow going on, and we all just connect in such a good way so it’s been really special so far.”

As final exams wrap up for UCLA students and student-athletes, this squad will likely play Rutgers with no academic stress while seeking to increase its win streak.
