A person allegedly attempted to sexually assault two people on the Hill in the past week, UCPD said in a Friday morning Clery Timely Warning.
UCPD first learned about one attempted rape at midnight Feb. 13, according to the alert, which was sent at 11:41 a.m. Friday. Another person reported a similar assault afterward, the warning said.
Neither person filed an official report with UCPD, according to the alert. UCPD believes the same suspect committed both attempted assaults, according to the alert.
Jeffrey Chobanian, the captain of UCPD’s operations bureau, said in an emailed statement that UCPD is not investigating the Feb. 13 assault and no arrests have been made. He added that if the affected party pursues a criminal report, the department will be available.
Chobanian did not respond to questions about the second attempted assault.
“Victims have the right to choose the reporting and resolution path that best meets their needs, and UCLA PD respects and supports that choice,” Chobanian said. “UCLA PD does not mandate, influence, or discourage a victim’s decision to engage law enforcement.”
He added in an interview that UCPD does not have enough information to determine whether there is an ongoing threat to students’ safety.
UCLA’s Title IX Office is managing the response to the Feb. 13 assault, according to the Clery warning.
UCPD reminded community members in the alert to remove themselves from social situations in which they feel threatened, ensure someone knows if they are going out alone, be aware of their surroundings when under the influence of alcohol and support people they believe are at risk of assault or abuse.
UCPD also urged community members to always obtain and ensure continuous consent during sexual activity, adding that people incapacitated by drugs or alcohol cannot give consent.
UCPD also included references to resources in the alert – including UCPD’s Community Service Office Evening Escort Program and Campus Assault Resources & Education, which provides support to community members who have experienced sexual violence.
UCPD issues Clery Timely Warnings, which are required by federal law, when crimes occurring near or on campus pose a serious or continuing threat to the campus community.
People with information that may assist Title XI with the response may contact the office at 310-206-3417.
